Do you know if the people that count on you for guidance and leadership are happy?
Have you asked them and then really listened to their answer?
Have you listened for what they aren’t saying? Do you even want to know?
If a team member has a cold, or their back has been hurting, it’s easy to check in and ask how they’re doing. Nothing scary about that. In contrast, how does asking about their emotional health feel? It’s equally, or even more important, and yet, it’s usually only addressed in a crisis situation.
It makes me wonder, if we checked in on each other’s emotional health more often, could we actually avoid some of the crisis?
I read this quote on a Facebook post and it got me thinking about this.
“Everyone you meet always asks if you have a career, are married or own a house, as if life was some kind of grocery list, but no one ever asks if you are happy.” ~ Heath Ledger
How often do you resort to the grocery list of topics instead of really getting to know what’s going on inside someone? Looking in the mirror in this moment, I realize I do it more often than I’d like to admit.
Think about how much we can learn about the culture of our team, our family, our circle of friends, or even a complete stranger, if we asked people if they are happy. So, why don’t we ask?
I’m sure there are many reasons why we don’t ask. Let’s find even more reasons for why we WILL ask moving forward. First, though, it will require us to be willing to share how we feel. Leaders go first. Vulnerability is the new strong. These aren’t just nice sayings. They’re tools to live our life at the next level.
Bosses want their employees to look happy. Leaders want their team to BE happy!
And, while it’s not our responsibility to make anyone else happy because true, lasting happiness can only happen from the inside. It IS our responsibility to show up human to human and give a damn.
