14 Mar Your Legacy
Somewhere in your life the words “Do as I say, not as I do” have either been spoken BY you or TO you. While you may not say those exact words, it would be good to check in to see if you are sending that message anywhere in your life. (For the record, it’s a total bulls#*t statement, yet it happens all the time.)
For example, you are teaching your children to speak positively about their friends, then when you think they aren’t listening, you are speaking negatively about yours. You want kids to tell the truth, and they hear you make an excuse that is clearly not true. It’s the same with your team members at work whether or not they report to you. Do you hold other people to a standard that you are unwilling to hold yourself to? Everyone is watching ALL of the time and they are going to do as you DO, not as you SAY. WHEN that happens, the person you need to have a chat with about it is yourself.
You are a role model whether or not you consciously choose it. The question is are you being a positive role model? What messages are you sending with your words and actions? If you don’t like the messages coming to you from those around you, it’s time to evaluate if you’re the originator.
They WILL do as you do, not as you say. How will you show up today that clearly communicates and demonstrates who you want others to be?
